Jérémy Doku: From Southampton Interest to Manchester City Stardom

A Close Brush with Southampton

At 23, Jérémy Doku finds himself on the brink of stardom at Manchester City, but the path he took to reach this point could have been dramatically different. During Southampton’s tumultuous 2022-23 Premier League season, when the club was grappling with relegation fears, they eyed Doku as a potential solution. The young winger, then at Rennes, seemed a fitting addition to their squad, and a move was discussed. However, while Southampton scoured the transfer market for reinforcements, Doku remained elusive, with no formal discussions leading to a deal. Fast forward six months, and instead of donning the Southampton colors, Doku walked through the doors of the Etihad Stadium in a transfer exceeding £50 million.

Reflecting on this turn of events, Doku commented, “Maybe they [Southampton] were interested, but there was never a conversation of me going there.” He interpreted this twist of fate as a sign that he was destined for a different path—one that would lead him to a team that is not only performing well but also aiming for a domestic treble under the strategic guidance of Pep Guardiola.

The Influence of Vincent Kompany

Doku’s journey to Manchester City is not merely marked by the Big Six allure, but also by the deep connections he shares with former City captain Vincent Kompany. Before making a name for himself at Rennes in 2020, Doku developed his skills at Anderlecht, the club where Kompany once captained. Knowing Kompany’s inherent understanding of City’s style, Doku speculated that the legendary defender may have played a key role in his transfer to the Etihad.

During his formative years at Anderlecht, Kompany often expressed his admiration for Doku, envisioning him as a future star for a top-tier club. Doku shared, “He always said he sees me playing in a team like this.” As the transfer window progressed in 2023, it seems plausible that City turned to Kompany for a nod about the winger’s potential—an endorsement that ultimately proved invaluable, leading Doku to join a squad filled with ambition and talent.

Doku’s Impact at City

Arriving at Manchester City, Doku quickly established himself as an integral part of Guardiola’s attacking framework. His performances have drawn attention, notably for topping Premier League charts in successful dribbles this season. His ability to take on defenders and create opportunities has made him a formidable threat on the pitch. Guardiola, however, has expressed some skepticism regarding Doku’s goal-scoring prowess, admitting that he doubts Doku will emerge as a top scorer. Yet, Guardiola also acknowledges the winger’s impact on the game, labeling him “unstoppable.”

Doku’s dribbling ability is matched by his impressive pace. While he humorously suggested that he could be outpaced over longer distances by teammate Abdukodir Khusanov, he backed himself in short bursts: “I think over 15 meters, I back myself.” His ability to draw multiple defenders can create space for teammates—a tactical advantage that Guardiola has capitalized on throughout the season.

The Drive for Improvement

Despite his tremendous skill set, Doku is aware that to truly belong among the elite wingers in the game, scoring goals must become a greater part of his identity. With only eight goals in 83 Premier League appearances, he acknowledges that improving his output in front of the goal will elevate him to the next level, rivaling names like Vinícius Júnior and Lamine Yamal.

Doku expressed, “Every time [it is from] dribbles, every time when I do it myself…” This indicates a clear understanding of his strengths but also points to a pressing need for more simplistic goal-scoring opportunities, such as tap-ins, which he admits are sometimes overlooked in his pursuit of more complex plays. He boldly stated, “If I have those goals, then I believe that I can get there for sure. 100%.”

As the season progresses, Doku is steadfast in his commitment to evolving his game. He sees the immense potential in pairing his impressive dribbling with the consistent goal tally expected of a top-tier winger. With the FA Cup semifinal approaching and City’s ambitions running high, Doku’s hunger for improvement may just propel him into the conversation about football’s brightest talents.
